happened to the wine during shipping?

Without opening the bottles you can see big chunks of sediment and the wine is pale and watery. I though perhaps it got baked. Oh, and the box has splatter and dirt all over it.

Answer:
It sounds like something that happened before shipping. Probably the case had been improperly stored upright for quite awhile, long enough to oxidize because the corks dried out. The sediment could be either cork pieces or mineralization.

Anyway, yes, phone your source and get a good replacement or your money back.
I'd phone co. and tell them. Don't open any, sounds as if somethings gone wrong.
Valpolocella should look dark red. Sediments are normal.
I would not open this wine for consumption.
Better safe then sorry.
It seems like it wasn't stored properly after bottling. Either kept too warm, too cold & most likely the bottles weren't stored on their SIDES.
