when you buy petrol it is always charged with .9 of a penny afterwards. You cant buy anything else for .9p so why do petrol companies charge this, and when did they first realise they could get away with it ?

Its the same with shops in uk who always seem to charge .99 after. Its psychological. If you look at an item that cost 16.99 your brain says thats 16.99 is a lot better than 17.00 because it is 16.
I would imagine it is the same with petrol. If you talk to a mate about you can get petrol for 110 a litre really you mean 110.9 which really is 111.

u will find everything u buy charges .something of a penny it happens that only petrol stations and some banks show it. i dont know why they charge it. perhaps it so they can make extra money of you when you buy stuff. if you go into tescos or somewhere have a look at the label of what you buy and in small writing underneath the actual price it will say for example 64.4p per 100g. now if you work it out that your product is 200g then that should be 1.28.8p but there isnt any .1ps in circulation so they charge to the nearest penny so it would be 1.29

Well its a bit like the old farthings of years ago. but as you say if you only bought a litre of petrol, who would?, you would pay the .99 price plus .01 to the nearest penny. It is used as a price to be multiplied , i.e. 10 litres would equate to a regular price, Its just to sound a little bit cheaper... 117.9 looks cheaper than 118. Even if filling up , the difference is only coppers.

they charge the price per litre, its not a bottle of petrol cost 129.9p each!!! we buy per litre to the nearest penny. before the prices went mad if a rise in prices was necessary, a raise of .4p per litre would be better on motorists than 1p rise.

The reason they put .9 at the end i.e 119.9 is to make it seem cheaper. It is the same reason people charge things like 1.99. It is supposed to make it look cheaper.
