Answers:
If you mean a baked potatao, you clean the potato, poke it a few times with a fork, wrap it in aluminum foil, and bake it for 60 minutes in an oven at 425 degrees. You'll know it's done because it will be soft when you squeeze it, with your oven mitt on of course.

Other Answers:
Wash the potato, stab it with a fork all the way around, put it in foil, oven set at 350 and bake for about an hour to an hour and a half

if you mean baked potato. I cut a slit in the potato wrap it in plastic, then stick it in the microwave for about 5-6 minutes. after that I remove the plastic and wrap it in aluminum foil for about 5 minutes and its ready to eat.
Here's a twist on the classic baked potato. If you like them buttery, slice down the middle (not all the way. just enough to open it) and put some butter down inside. Then fold back together, wrap in foil and bake. Cheese in a baked potato is also quite tasty. :)
Wash it
Poke it
put in microwave 15 - 20 min
cut off top
scoop out insides into a bowl
mix with sour cream, chives, onion, and shredded Cheddar cheese
place all back into potato skin
bake @ 350 for 5 - 10 min
take out
top with cheese
Here you go, step by step instructions with pictures!

Wow, you people and your foil!! Don't you realize that FOIL = SPOIL in the world of baked potatoes!!?? Yes, the restaurants all do it, but that is because they have to save time, not make things taste good! The foil holds all the moisture into a baked potato, making it soggy instead of fluffy -- basically, you end up steaming it. Same problem with microwaving it -- fast but not tasty.

For true *good eats* (sorry, Alton!), wash your potatoe, preferably a good Idaho, poke it few times with a fork, rub it with olive oil, sprinkle it with grill seasonings, place it directly on the rack in a 350 degree oven (450 if you are in a hurry) and wait about 1 hour. If you use a toaster oven (I do) and 450 degrees (I do), it only takes about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.

The result is a CRISPY outer crust with wonderful flavor that you can actually EAT!!! Inside, when you cut it open, will be a dry, flaky potatoe, not a mealy, mushy one. Best I've ever eaten, anyway. Hope you give it a try and enjoy it. Good luck!!
preheat oven to 375 clean potatoe stick a clean nail all the way through wrap min foil put on baking sheet in hour unwrap potatoe cut in half to see if tender if not wrap back up and cook for 30 min. should be done
Scrub the potato. Poke it several times with a fork. Put it on a microwave safe plate and microwave for about 6-8 minutes. It may need more depending on the size of the potato. You will know it is done when it feels soft when you squeeze it or when a fork pokes into it easily. Then you can put butter or sour cream and chives, or chili, or cheese and cooked broccoli, or salsa, or whatever else you think might be good on a potato. Cooking in the microwave is a lot faster than the oven.
Scrub the potato well with a brush. Take a fork and poke holes in the potato several times to allow steam to escape. Rub the skin of the potato all over with butter. Wrap potato in foil. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for about an hour.
Start with a good, clean, Organic Russet. Using a fork, prick the skin generously to allow steam to escape during baking. A little olive oil is nice to rub onto the skin (don't put it on too think, it'll just mess your oven up) and you can lightly salt it. Pop it on the middle rack in a 350 degree oven and bake until soft (about 45 mins.)
Most of the time, I don't even put olive oil on the skin... it bakes up fine. But Vahzmin is absolutely correct, the potato is far superior when allowed to bake unwrapped.
If you mean baked potato - I wash and prick the potato, dry it, wrap it in paper kitchen towel , place in microwave and cook until soft, turning once. When cooked I cut the potato in half and scoop the pulp out of the skin. I very finely chop about a tablespoon of onion, season with freshly ground pepper and freshly ground sea salt,, add about 1 - 2 tablespoons of grated cheese. I mash thoroughly then place the potato back into the skins and top with a little grated cheese, place under a hot grill or in a hot oven until the cheese bubbles.
