Many of us former %26quot;hippies%26quot; were very much into natural foods and led vegetarian lifestyles. It was a time of alfalfa sprouts, lentils and rice, homemade mac and cheese, tofu, kefir, etc. Some of us still ate meat, but it was lean turkey, no red meat, and a variety of gourmet cheeses. If you are having an authentic %26quot;hippie%26quot; themed party, complete with food, here are some ideas:

1. Spinach salad with sunflower seeds, alfalfa sprouts, tomatos, hard cooked egg, cucumbers, your favorite dressing.
2. Carob nut brownies
3. Lentil Tostadas (cook lentils with onion, salt, pepper, cumin, and chili powder until thickened. Fry corn tortillas to crisp and top with lentils, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatos, salsa)
4. Vegetable stew with cornbread dumplings
5. Vegetable chili with cornbread
6. Cheese and crackers
7. Deviled eggs
8. Hummus and pita

TANG, THE %26quot;SPACE AGE%26quot; DRINK
Tang was trademarked in 1957 (U.S. Patent %26amp; Trademark Office registration #1974439) and introduced to the American public in 1959. It was invented as a modern breakfast beverage, not commissioned by the U.S. space program. It was, however, the space program that made Tang a household name. In 1965 the Gemini astronauts took this drink into outer space.

ORIGINAL RECIPE CIRCA 1966
%26quot;Tunnel of Fudge Cake
1 1/2 cups butter or margarine, softened
6 eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 cups Pillsbury%26#039;s Best All Purpose Flour
1 package Pillsbury Two Layer Size Buttercream Double Dutch Frosting Mix
2 cups chopped walnuts or pecans
Oven 350 degrees F. Bundt Cake
Generously grease Bundt pan. In large mixer bowl, cream butter at high speed. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Gradually add sugar; beat at high speed until light and fluffy. By hand, stir in flour, dry frosting mix and walnuts until well blended. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 350 degress F. for 60 to 65 minutes. Cool 1 hour; remove from pan. Cool completely before serving. Tips: Buttercream Double Dutch Frosting Mix and walnuts are essential to the success of this recipe. Since the cake has the softened tunnel of fudge, ordinary doneness tests can not be used. Test after 60 minutes by observing a dry, shiny brownie-type crust. Cake may be baked in 10-inch tube pan at 350 degreees F. for 60 to 65 minutes. Serve cake right side up as for a pound cake. *Pillsbury%26#039;s Best Self-Rising Flour is not recomended for use in this recipe. High Altitude Adjustment--5,200 Feet. Bake at 275 degrees F. for 60 to 65 minutes.%26quot;
